From There to Here

Tapestries of Transformation brought veterans, active military, artists, and community members together through a creative storytelling experience in Joshua Tree, California. Beginning in 2023 and concluding in September 2024, the program included an immersive retreat, community gatherings, multidisciplinary workshops, and eight weeks of collaborative playmaking. Participants explored themes of service, identity, belonging, and place while building meaningful relationships across diverse backgrounds.

The program culminated in a sold-out, community-driven theatrical performance on May 4 that showcased the stories, creativity, and connections developed throughout the experience. The performance concluded with a moving moment of audience participation alongside the actors, directors, and volunteers, reflecting the project’s spirit of collaboration and shared humanity.

The production received the Outstanding Indoor Theatrical Production award at the Joshua Awards, presented by The Joshua Tree Voice. To extend the project’s impact, Mil-Tree created a replication toolkit for organizations interested in adapting the model for their own communities.
